What's the deal with Majid Jay?

Bad news from the failbox: Waad Hirmez came back RTS, having moved from the address I had down for him. I have a good three others to try out though.  Anyways, on to the main point of this post...

*Cue the music from Unsolved Mysteries*

As I've been delving back into this project, I know I'm going to have to do some searching. And so one major mystery to me has been former referee Majid Jay, card #166 in the 1990-91 Pacific set.

All the referees in that set have signed for me: Esse Baharmast, Brian Hall, Gino D'Ippolito, Marty Templin, Herb Silva, Kelly Mock... all but Majid Jay.

When I wrote to Hall, he told me that no one knows where Jay is now.

Searches for him mostly bring up this card, MISL boxscores, the fact he officiated the 1990 CONCACAF Champions Cup, the 1991-1993 Gold Cups, and at least one 1991 NCAA game (a Cal State Fullerton vs. UNLV game that ended in a brawl). He was even listed on the United States Soccer Federation's Referee Honor Roll from 1989-1993, representing California.

Searching out addresses brought up the name Majid Abotalebi, and at least one MISL boxscore confirms this as a likely alias.

Further searching on addresses brings up that he is 64 years old (which would be approximately correct) and what appears to be a wife, Brenda M. Ortega-Abotalebi, age 71.

Now here's where the oddities begin...

The last listed address that I could dig up on Majid Jay was in Riverside, CA. This address was tested by my friend Brian, and met with a note saying "Wrong address, Please Return" and the dreaded yellow Return To Sender sticker back in early 2016. Most addresses tied to his name have been in Riverside, Corona, and Los Alamitos CA, from 1995 to 2017.

The last listed address for Ortega-Abotalebi was in Capistrano Beach, CA. Her addresses have been in California from 1989 to 2010.

The last listed address for the Abotalebi name was at a Las Vegas extended stay hotel.  In fact, the previous three addresses for him were all Vegas extended-stay hotels and a PO Box, dating 2011 and 2012.  Prior to being in Vegas, his is associated with addresses in Houston (2010 and 1997), Virginia (2008 and 2009), Riverside CA (2007-2011), Los Alamitos CA (1996-2002), Waco TX (1998-2000), Kirkland WA (2001), Hewitt TX (1998), Irvine CA (1989-1996), and Cypress CA (1989-1993). That's a lot of movement, and the Vegas ones are an interesting touch.

And then we get this strange comment dating back to 2002: "Call the university to verify; I am no Majid Jay."

*record scratch*

Is this a fraud allegation of some sort? For no one to question the Jay comment makes it seems like there's something widely known about him that I'm missing. And I can't ask the person who said it: Robert Evans died in 2016.

Digging further, it appears he (or someone with his name) was arrested in Clark County, NV in February 2012: Burglary with intent to commit a felony, and possession or sale of false identification.

Alright, help me out here. I can find no record of Jay's involvement in soccer post-April 1993 or in anything at all post-2012. Most in this project I can find info on-- current jobs, addresses, places they're coaching. Even those who are deceased, I can typically find their date of death and place of burial. But aside from a string of seemingly unconnected addresses, some associated names, a fairly low-level arrest, and a previously unknown-to-me alias, Majid Jay has completely disappeared.

It's just... bizarre. I'm at a loss here. And I say that as one who was able to find Nenad Nikolic's death that it seemed no one knew about, and have been praised for my ability to find the whereabouts of a lot of players that no one else could track down.

I've reached out to the BigSoccer forum linked above, and was simply told there's "way too much to go into here." Egad man! Inquiring minds want to know!

If you have any information (or if any of the above is factually incorrect), leave a comment here. I'm intrigued, to say the least.

UPDATES
JULY 27, 2019, 10:30 PM: I was messaged by a member of a soccer forum with some information and the whole situation sounds almost Dolly Gray or Byron McLaughlin-esque; I just would prefer not to have to pull a Dave Cameron to get my cards signed (I tried to link to the Cameron story but it's in a Facebook group and the post is set to Members Only; I'll post it as a comment).

JUNE 18, 2020, 12:25 PM: He did indeed legally change his surname from Abotalebi to Jay. This name change, as the link shows, came up again in 2008 and 2013. I still am lacking information on him and my aforementioned forum source never responded with more. I plan to reach out to him again soon.

JULY 28, 2020, 4:29 PM: I have been in contact with two former referees, one of whom seemed insistent on Jay being deceased, saying "he was killed years ago, virtually 100% sure." The other said that Jay is alive, living in California, and either he or an associate of his has spoken to him recently, but also that Jay himself said he can't sign my card (not sure of the reasoning-- whether physical ability or just something related to not wanting to be found). I have also been communicating again with the forum source, but we have agreed that anything that he tells me will remain silent and not posted here. Several pieces from the forum source were corroborated by the referee though, without me even having to ask-- he just dropped some of that info himself.

MAY 28, 2021, 7:55 PM: My forum source has gone radio silent for several months now. I've pretty well given up on getting the whole story here.

AUGUST 9, 2021, 3:22 PM: My attempt at mailing the last known address for his (possible) wife ended with my letter returned from Fiduciary Real Estate Services, and a note that he did not live there. I also found some info back in May that he (under the Jay surname) was a registered flight instructor in Las Vegas through 2015. I have seen Vegas addresses for him, but they appeared fairly temporary (a hotel and a mailbox rental) so I didn't try them. Ditto on most recent California addresses.

Cashing in?

I tried something different on this batch of international mailings.

It's tough sometimes to get international postage. Paying face value for the appropriate stamps is almost impossible since someone somewhere along the line has to eat the shipping costs to get the stamps from their original country. If I buy direct from Canada Post, South African Post Office, Correo Argentina, Royal Mail in the UK, Post NL in the Netherlands, BH Pošta in Bosnia, Pošta PBS in Slovenia, Croatia's Hrvatska Pošta, or ЈП Пошта Србије in Serbia, I'm not only paying face value for the stamp, but also the cost to ship that stamp over here, essentially paying double. Even if I buy from a stamp dealer who buys in bulk, it'll still be slightly higher to disperse shipping costs and likely have a premium added on so that they get their profit.

So, why not cut out the middle man?

This time when I sent to Dale Mitchell in Canada, Dali in Bosnia, and Bobo Lucic in Slovenia, I just slipped in some cash to cover the postage. Around $2 in USD should cover a stamp from any of these. Slovenia's postage costs €1.17, about $1.31. A few years ago, Bosnia's was 2.15 BAM, about $1.23. Canada's is currently C$1.33, approximately US$1.02.

I plan to do the same tomorrow with Damir Haramina, Jan Goossens, Omar Gomez, and Pasquale Deluca; then Mark Karpun once I get a couple more singles (pro tip: don't send coins), and once Goossens returns Carl Valentine.  I know another collector had success just including cash for postage from Goossens.

We'll see how it goes. Trial and error is about all you can really do in this hobby sometimes.

Let's Go!

The first batch has hit the mailbox. I held off on Kia-- I got the card I was missing for $1 including shipping; same deal on Tim Wittman's card. They should be here next week. I also have held off on Steve Kinsey (only because I forgot to stamp the envelope; it'll go out tomorrow) and Greg Ion. Turns out Ion was hired by Temecula United in California, so I'm hoping to hear from them about an email address or mailing address to reach him directly. The addresses I had found for him were all in Washington, Oregon, and Arizona-- I doubt those are correct now.

Also, I found David Byrne on Facebook. I tried messaging him about how I can mail him. We'll see if I get an answer. That would be a huge one if I hear back. Looks like he's still in South Africa, but no longer coaching Glendene United. I also emailed Hellenic FC, where he once played and his brother is currently Technical Director. They gave me his phone number, but I've never tried to make an international call before. I'm way better with writing anyway. I may try texting him.

A little more digging has found me Bobo Lucic's whereabouts, so I plan to try him soon, along with a second attempt at Dalibor Cvitanovic.  Related: I need Slovenian and Bosnian stamps. Canadian ones too so I can get my last Mark Karpun card signed, and hopefully try Pasquale Deluca again, along with Dale Mitchell and Carl Valentine. Maybe an Argentinian one to send to Omar Gomez. Probably some Italian ones too, since I'd like to try Roberto Baggio. And a Swiss one so I can send to Roger Federer. Okay, I'm getting off-topic now.

I also need to contact Stuart Lee about finishing my Sidekicks game program.

As of right now, the project is down to needing at least one signed by each of these guys.

See you in Vegas!

It's official, I'll be at the MISL 40th Anniversary Reunion celebration in July!

I reserved my hotel spot, along with my ticket for the invite-only events and plane ticket so I'm all set to be there for everything.

I haven't heard any official list of former players who will be there yet, aside from Greg Suttie mentioning that he's gotten Juli Veee, Zoltan Toth, George Katakalidis, and Cha Cha Namdar likely to be there. Alan Mayer has also said he will be there along with Norman Piper, league co-founders Doug Verb and Ed Tepper and the family of legendary coach Ron Newman.

Several historians of the game will be there as well-- I'm seeing the likes of the aforementioned Greg Suttie of the Suttie on Soccer podcast and Sydney Nusinov of the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame.

A few have said they won't be able to attend, including Otto Orf, Branko Segota, Marco Rizi, Paul Dougherty, and Marty Templin.

And it looks like there's at least interest in attending from players Chico Borja, Doc Lawson, Kia Zolgharnain, Dave MacKenzie, Keith Tozer, Hayden Knight, Freddy Garcia, Dave MacWilliams, and Gerry Gray; coaches Joe Machnik, Len Bilous, and Roy Turner; exec Paul Garofolo; and broadcaster Randy Hahn. Hopefully we'll see more added to that list!

Either way, I plan to carry every unsigned card I have with me, especially those I need for my sets. And I may even take the signed collection with me to show off and possibly doubles to trade if there are other collectors in attendance. I know a few have expressed interest.

Doing a little housekeeping on here, I added the 1992-93 NPSL set officially to the project and took down the Soccer Shots set-- a little bit of a tradeoff, making one available as deal bait while adding the other officially to the canon.

An edit to the earlier...

Bad news, the Las Vegas reunion had to change its date.

Good news though, they believe it will be able to attract more former players!

Per an email from Doug Verb, the Reunion will now be held in Vegas on July 2-4.

Further details will be posted as they are made public.

Another Anniversary Event!

I'll have to miss this one, but if you can get to the Cleveland area, check it out!

"Be there. Aloha."

Not sure if I'll be able to make it, but my fingers are crossed...

If I can't, I may need some assistance on getting some cards signed.

Farewell to a legend

Throughout the existence of this project, I haven't had the opportunity to meet many of the players who have signed their cards. I'd guess that somewhere around 90% were acquired via mail, trades, or the rare purchase. It's great getting to correspond with these guys via mail, especially receiving letters back from them, but actually getting to meet them is even better, especially when you know you're talking to one of the game's greats in a sport that is almost criminally under-recognized.

Back on March 18, 2017 was one of those moments. After having met a number of former Sidekicks at their alumni events, Fernando Clavijo was the first non-Sidekick I had met since the 2001-02 All-Star Game. I was warned ahead of time that Fernando will talk and sign and do almost anything for the fans for hours if you let him. The four of us who were waiting after the game certainly didn't leave disappointed, as Fernando regaled us with stories of playing along other greats like Steve Zungul, Juli Veee, Branko Segota, and Preki, while signing every card we had with us.

A defender and midfielder, Clavijo wasn't one to put up boatloads of points (120-139-259 in 466 career indoor games) but was a solid, speedy, tenacious defender both indoors and outdoors. When you talk about players doing big things that don't appear on stat sheets, Clavijo fit that to a T. In addition to his MISL play, he spent time in the NASL and after becoming a U.S. citizen in 1987, joined the U.S. Men's National Team and U.S. National Futsal Team. He played in the 1994 World Cup, helped lead the USMNT to the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and a second place finish at the 1992 FIFA Futsal World Championships.

When you look at the greats of any game, once in a while you find that one guy who played with seemingly all of them and helped push them to that greatness. Clavijo's teammates and coaches in the MISL included Indoor Hall of Famer members Kevin Crow, Slobo Ilijevski, Victor Nogueira, Brian Quinn, Zoltan Toth, the aforementioned group of Zungul, Vee, Preki, and Segota, plus Ron Newman and Don Popovic. He also spent a year playing alongside future all-time indoor scoring leader Hector Marinaro as he made the transition from defender to forward in Los Angeles,

In 2005, he was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame followed by the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame in 2014. He joins Preki, Dale Mitchell, and Branko Segota as the only players in both the Indoor Hall, and either the U.S. or Canadian Hall.

His coaching and front office work were Hall of Fame caliber as well. He was a player-coach in his final MISL season, won the Coach of the Year and a Championship in the CISL, assisted with the 1998 Nigerian Men's National Team, took the New England Revolution to a 2000 playoff berth and 2001 U.S. Open Cup Final appearance, coached the Haitian Men's National Team, and spent four seasons coaching the Colorado Rapids with a pair of playoff appearances. With FC Dallas, he held the role of Technical Director for seven seasons, helping to assemble a team that won the 2016 U.S. Open Cup, one other regular season first place finish, and three other playoff appearances.

Fernando was in good spirits that day. He had beaten multiple myeloma months before, still battling a few health issues, but seemed to be positive and was looking forward to some trips to scout potential players. He even appeared to be doing well at the NASL 50th Anniversary event in October 2018, not long after he announced a leave of absence his FC Dallas position to focus on his health after a return of the cancer. So to say it was surprising to hear he died earlier this week is an understatement.

Fernando Clavijo was 63 years old. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, two grandchildren, and legions of soccer fans who were grateful for the chances to meet him and see him play.

A success, and a delay

Let's start with the good.

Got Jim Gabarra back last week, signing three cards, so that inches me closer on the 88/89, 90/91, and 91/92 sets.

I also sent requests out to Preki, Beto, Heinz Wirtz, Scott Manning, and Nenad Zigante. We'll keep the fingers crossed...

The bad news: It looks like the MISL 40th Anniversary event will be moved back to the spring.

And that's not necessarily bad, really. I was hoping to go up to Cleveland at Christmas, and doing a Vegas weekend and a Cleveland week so close together would be tough, if not impossible. This helps give me some time to potentially do both if I can swing it.

I saw a few former players' names on the email list for it, so I'm hoping that we might get several interested. And giving a few extra months for preparation and keeping it away from a major holiday should help to get some more in.

Who would I like to see? Well, namely...

Ed Anibal, Desmond Armstrong, Beto, Mike Brady, David Byrne, Bill Crook, Dali, Pasquale Deluca, Claudio De Oliveira, B.J. Esposito, George Fernandez, Poli Garcia, Omar Gomez, Kai Haaskivi, Damir Haramina, Chris Haywood, Alan Hinton, Waad Hirmez, David Hoggan, Chris Hundelt, Greg Ion, Majid Jay, Mark Karpun, Keder, Mark Kerlin, Steve Kinsey, Bobo Lucic, Scott Manning, Pato Margetic, Dennis Mepham, Dale Mitchell, Victor Moreland, Victor Nogueira, Angelo Panzetta, Joe Papaleo, Hugo Perez, Paul Peschisolido, Preki, Erik Rasmussen, Frank Rasmussen, Terry Rowe, Chris Simon, Rick Snyder, Tatu, Carl Valentine, Juli Veee, Arturo Velazco, Gregg Willin, Heinz Wirtz, Nenad Zigante, and Steve Zungul

And anyone on a multi-player card that I don't have finished. Yeah, I'm a bit transparent in what I want, aren't I?

I might also have some help on those guys before then. Someone might be able to get me Juli Veee, and Kai Haaskivi will be at the NASL event next month here in Dallas. And some that I've mailed off might come back. And I might gamble on a few more European mailings.

To be honest, though, the answer is anyone. I may have to go seek out some photos to get signed since I'm nearly 80% of the way into the card sets.  I'd hope to find some that I could blow up to 11x14, but that might be tough. I could go for 8x10 at least, maybe even down to 5x7 if I have to.

Big event in DFW!

It looks like the Soccer Hall of Fame is finally almost ready to open its doors-- thanks to a pair of Brians (Reser and Gutmann) for giving me info on this...

In addition to the celebration for Hall of Fame Weekend, Frisco will also be putting on a celebration for the NASL's 50th anniversary.

Needless to say, I've already bought tickets because I have a few project needs on guys who will be there for the NASL game-- Tatu, Mike Sweeney, Fernando Clavijo, and of course my fellow Finn, Kai Haaskivi!

I also have hopes for a few other players to be added just for the general festivities as HOF members: Pele (also an NASL player, but unlikely to play at 77 years old), Preki, and Desmond Armstrong would be nice additions.

I have about seven cards I need Haaskivi to sign, plus a couple for Sweeney, one for Clavijo, and maybe three plus some photos for Tatu. I have a ton of non-set cards for him as well (20-30 or so), but I'll hold back a bit.

Hope to see some of you there; my wife and I will be sitting in Section 126 for the FC Dallas-Sporting KC game and the NASL Legends game. We will likely try to make the postgame party at the British Lion Pub, and I may even try to 'graph some of the other events as well.

It DOES exist!

Was just hacking around through eBay a few minutes ago and found a nice lot of MISL autographs and non-autographs.

A while back I mentioned I was still doubting the existence of the Scoop Stanisic corrected version of the 1989-90 card, mostly since I had never seen one aside from a photo on a website. I figured maybe it was a fan-made custom, but a commenter on here told me it does exist and where I could find it.

So I tried. And got the error version.

Today, I found an eBay auction.  And the corrected Stanisic is part of it.

And signed.

Along with several others I need.

I put in an offer. There are over 200 signed cards, plus complete sets of all of the indoor sets. They wanted $140 shipped which I can't justify when I may only need half of what's in there, but for several that I know I need, I figure a lower offer might be worth a try. For all I know the seller may be desperate to move them for cheap.

My fingers are crossed, but at least I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Scoop card is truly real.

EDIT: It sold for $75 plus $35 shipping.  If you bought it and are interested in selling or trading any, please let me know. I talked to Ray in Baltimore and it wasn't him. Rob Parker? You perhaps?

Dammit...

MISL 40th Reunion Event?

I was scrolling through my Facebook feed the other day when a post from the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame caught my eye.

If it's too small to read easily, a group is trying to get together a 40th anniversary reunion for the MISL this December/January in Las Vegas.  Not sure yet if I'll be able to go, but I'm hopeful depending on price. I know among the shares and reposts of it on various groups, at least a few former players expressed interest in it (including Mark Kerlin; I have a few cards I need him to sign).  It may be my best/only chance at getting some guys like Kerlin, Brian Quinn, Carl Valentine, Kai Haaskivi, and Juli Veee. Maybe even knock out some of those multi-player cards.

I sent to the email address on it to ask about mailing in autograph items in the event that I can't make it. Haven't heard anything back yet.

New Year, New List, New Price

You may have noticed the PayPal links to buy my autograph list have been taken down.

That's because starting here in 2018, all the info is FREE!

I just got to thinking that it's not worth it to charge even a few bucks for something that I do for free and quickly and unfortunately can't always guarantee the accuracy of. Getting a few to buy copies early on was nice, but getting the info out to help the hobby is its own reward. And it's not like there's a huge market of buyers out there for the list. Indoor soccer collectors are a much smaller group than many other sports.

So, it's free from here on!

Let's trade!

Have I really not posted a trade list yet?  Geez...

There also are a bunch I wouldn't mind trading for from some Dallas Sidekicks team sets (1986-87 and 1987-88 Coca-Cola; 1988-89 Fox 33/KOJO 94) and any Cleveland Force or Crunch team sets. Always looking for all sorts of Crunch and Force memorabilia really, not just signed stuff.

Got any you want? Got stuff for trade? Leave me a comment and we'll see what we can do!
